Today, millions of young Americans are in need of a mentor. Amaze Me is designed to answer the “who, what, when, where, and why” questions about building a mentor and mentee relationship. Amaze Me is an organization that supports mentoring initiatives by using an interactive program that educates people about the benefits of mentors, and aims to teach potential mentors how to cultivate the building blocks of a mentor/mentee relationship. It also strives to educate people on how to sustain successful mentor relationships through open and active communication. Everyone should have someone that inspires them to be the best version of themselves, and encourages them throughout their journey to discover what exactly that means.
Through Amaze Me, mentors are encouraged to take a pledge, committing to being positive mentors. In return for taking the pledge, mentors will be given Amaze Me’s signature blue bracelets with a star charm to serve as a symbol that they are committed to being influential mentors. It was the relationship I had with my own mentor that taught me the importance of relationships that encourage growth, work ethic, and unconditional support. It is because of the incredibleimpact of my own mentor on my life that I feel so passionate about helping others to developmentor relationships of their own, that allow them to realize their true and full potential.
At age 9, my mentor was Brooks Going, a world renowned baton twirling coach. Initially, Ithought he was in my life to teach me how to twirl baton. Our relationship grew as we spenthours together in the gym practicing and traveling the United States for seminars andcompetitions. Before each of my lessons, the words “Ok Jillian, Amaze Me” were spoken. Heexpected the best version of myself each and every time I trained with him. My coach becamemy mentor, as he always had the upmost confidence in me. He always offered constructivecriticism, and taught me to push and challenge myself every day, not only to be a better batontwirler, but a better person. He cherished the wins, and used the losses as valuable teachingmoments. Brooks was an inspiration to many. Brooks passed away in April 2010, and I am determined to continue his legacy with the simple and powerful meaning behind those wordsthat would become my motto: Amaze Me.
